There are a lot of great ways for the House of Mouse to honor its 2024 Disney Legends and the projects they’ve worked on for the company over its long past.
Disney named 14 new Legends on Tuesday for the D23 fan gathering later this year. These include Miley Cyrus, who became renowned on Disney Channel and in Hannah Montana, Harrison Ford, who played Indiana Jones in Star Wars, and Angela Bassett, who was the first Academy Award nominee for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022.
The hall-of-fame-style awards show also honored actress Jamie Lee Curtis from “The Haunted Mansion” and “Freaky Friday,” director James Cameron for “Avatar,” director James L. Brooks for “Broadcast News,” Frank Oz from “The Muppets,” Kelly Ripa from “The View,” Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood for “Alice in Wonderland,” Martha Blanding, who Disney called “the first permanent full-time Black tour guide” at Disneyland, and comics artist Steve Ditko.
“Being named a Disney Legend is the ultimate recognition from our company, reserved for individuals who have made a lasting impact on our history through their talent and achievements,” stated Bob Iger. “The fourteen individuals being recognized as Legends this year have made exceptional creative contributions in various areas of Disney. We are excited to honor them at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event.”

The legendary designation is for “artists and visionaries throughout the company’s history who have pushed the envelope of creativity, challenged conventional wisdom, and broken the restraints of the status quo in search of new possibilities and excellence,” a release said. It is one of the highest honors that Disney can bestow.
Honorees include Oprah Winfrey, Howard Ashman, Dick Van Dyke, Elton John, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, George Lucas, and Robert Downey Jr.
This year’s D23 starts on Friday, August 9, in Anaheim, California. The Disney Legends Awards Ceremony, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, Ripa’s Live cohost, concludes the fan event on Sunday, August 11.
