Exciting changes are coming to Formula 1 as the sport becomes more powerful and sustainable in 2026! General Motors (GM) recently announced its entry into Formula 1, bringing Cadillac to the grid through a new venture, GM Performance Power Units LLC, in partnership with TWG Motorsports.
Led by Russ O’Blenes, a seasoned motorsports engineer with over 30 years of experience, Cadillac is set to become a “full works” team, developing both cars and power units by the end of the decade. While Cadillac will initially use Ferrari engines, GM plans to launch its own power units once they meet racing approval.
2026 will mark a significant evolution in Formula 1’s hybrid technology:
- Increased Electric Power: Hybrid systems will triple their output from 120 kW to 350 kW.
- Reduced ICE Power: Internal combustion engine output will drop to 400 kW, but the total power will increase due to improved hybrid systems.
- Efficiency Gains: Braking energy recovery will double, and cars will be 30 kg lighter.
On the sustainability front, Formula 1 is adopting greener policies to reduce its environmental impact while delivering thrilling motorsport entertainment. Cadillac’s entry reinforces GM’s leadership in both consumer EVs and innovative racing technology.
