https://windsurf.com/Google is shelling out a reported $2.4 billion to license technology from AI startup Windsurf and hire key members of its team, including CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen. The group will be absorbed into Google DeepMind, where they’ll focus on agentic coding and contribute to the Gemini project.
The deal isn’t a full acquisition — Windsurf, officially known as Exafunction Inc., will continue to operate independently. But it marks a major strategic move for Google following Windsurf’s failed $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI.
Founded in 2021, Windsurf develops AI-powered coding tools designed to automate programming tasks. This latest agreement is another sign of how fierce the AI talent race has become, with Big Tech paying top dollar to gain an edge.
