During her Tuesday hearing before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, FKA Twigs spoke passionately about the dangers that AI poses to artists’ careers.
Tahliah Debrett Barnett, better known as Twigs, spoke alongside Robert Kyncl, CEO of Warner Music Group, about the need for more regulation of artificial intelligence and deepfakes. In her testimony, she also disclosed that she is working on her deepfakes and recognizes the potential advantages of using this technology.
My painting serves as both an outlet for self-expression and a means of financial support. I am completely devoted to it. The danger, nevertheless, is mounting. “Those who control AI have the power to mimic my likeness, replicate my art, and falsely claim my identity and intellectual property. AI cannot replicate the depth of my life journey,” the singer-songwriter read from her written testimony.
Lawmakers Debate “NO FAKES Act”: Protecting Artists from AI Deepfakes
The panel is discussing the bipartisan “NO FAKES Act” (Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe Act) to strengthen recording artists legal safeguards against artificial intelligence. This is especially true regarding non-consensual deepfakes that utilize an individual’s voice and visual likeness. An “unauthorized digital replica” maker would be subject to the law’s penalties.

The fundamental essence of my being is in jeopardy because of this possibility. “We must act swiftly to establish regulations that will ensure our genuineness and prevent the infringement of our inherent rights,” Twigs said.
She said she spent a year constructing her deepfake with a character “trained” to match her behavior and whose “exact tone of voice to speak many languages.”She claims that to concentrate on her art, she will utilize “AI twigs” to manage and expand her social media contacts. Deepfakes and artificial intelligence, she said, can be “highly valuable tools both artistically and commercially when under the control of the artist.”
