Early Review
Alert movie buffs and Elon Musk fans: Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (for “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief”) is set to helm an upcoming documentary about the controversial billionaire.
Musk has taken to Twitter to express his displeasure with the film before it has even been released, despite the fact that neither a release date nor a title has been set.
Musk said on Twitter, “It’s a hit piece,” in response to a tweet about the movie’s release.
But Gibney wasn’t going to take the comment lying down.
Replying, “How would you know?” he asked. No word back from Musk as of yet.
Negative Appearance
If his reaction is any indication, however, Musk has reason to be concerned. Truth be told, he does have cause for concern.
The studio behind the film called it a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of Musk, as reported by Variety. If you’re familiar with Gibney’s previous work, you know that this documentary won’t be a glorifying portrait of its subject.
Consider his previous film, “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” which investigated corporate fraud committed by Enron’s upper management.
In his 2019 documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” Gibney takes on another tech industry billionaire, disgraced biotech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes.
The recent acquisition of Twitter has propelled Musk even further into the public eye, making him a ripe target for Gibney’s documentary.
Indeed, as the world’s richest man, Musk continues to divide opinion and gain a devoted following of people who will defend his reputation at any cost.
“Now is the moment for a rigorous portrait of Elon Musk,” said Zhang Xin, founder of production company Closer Media, which is producing the film, as quoted by Variety.
